KAIST and NVIDIA Launch $300M AI Partnership for Robotics and Agentic AI
South Korean university secures five-year commitment to develop human motion foundation models and Korean-language AI agents.
KAIST and NVIDIA announced a dual-track partnership committing $300 million over five years to advance agentic AI and physical robotics, marking one of the largest university-industry AI collaborations in South Korea.
The agreement establishes two initiatives: the NVIDIA-KAIST Joint AI Research Lab, developing AI agents for Korean language and industry applications, and the Human Physical AI NVIDIA AI Technology Center (NVAITC), creating a foundation model for human motion to power next-generation wearable robots and humanoids.
Computing Power and Research Scope
The Joint AI Research Lab will receive $50 million annually in AI computing resources from NVIDIA, providing KAIST researchers with infrastructure to train large-scale models. The five-year commitment positions the partnership as a cornerstone of South Korea's national push for AI sovereignty.
The collaboration follows NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang's visit to Seoul in June 2026 and a subsequent meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in San Francisco in July 2026. The timing aligns with the Korean government's strategic priority to strengthen industrial competitiveness in robotics and manufacturing through Physical AI.
Human Motion Foundation Model
The NVAITC, housed within KAIST's Department of Mechanical Engineering, will develop a Human Motion Foundation Model to enable robots to understand and predict human movement. The center is led by Professors Kyoungchul Kong and Jung Kim, who bring expertise in wearable robotics and biorobotics.
"The KAIST Human Physical AI Research Center has world-class human motion data and research capabilities in wearable robotics," said Charles Cheung, Senior Manager at NVIDIA AI Technology Center. "This research, which seeks to reproduce human movement through AI, is expected to open new possibilities for Physical AI."
The foundation model could accelerate deployment of wearable robots for medical rehabilitation and humanoid robots for industrial applications, bridging NVIDIA's AI computing infrastructure with real-world physical systems.
Knowledge Transfer and Education
The partnership includes a Student Ambassador Program to train the next generation of AI researchers and an annual international symposium to disseminate research outcomes.
"Competitiveness in the era of Physical AI will depend not simply on AI itself, but on domain-specific technologies and data grounded in a deep understanding of humans and robots," said KAIST President Choongsik Bae.
Broader Industry Context
The announcement comes as NVIDIA expands its NVAITC network across South Korea. Seoul National University announced its own NVAITC partnership on July 24, 2026, signaling intensified competition among Korean institutions to secure AI infrastructure.
The dual initiatives reflect a strategic division: KAIST's Joint Lab targets software-based AI agents for Korean-language applications, while the NVAITC focuses on hardware-adjacent physical AI systems.
By securing localized AI computing resources and developing domain-specific foundation models, the partnership aims to reduce South Korea's dependence on foreign AI infrastructure while positioning Korean researchers at the forefront of Physical AI development.
