MDA Space Wins $474M Order to Expand Telesat Lightspeed Constellation

The aerospace firm will increase satellite production to 225 units and integrate military-grade spectrum for Arctic connectivity.

MDA Space has secured a $474 million follow-on order to expand the Telesat Lightspeed low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation. The agreement scales up the production of MDA AURORA™ satellites and enhances the network's military capabilities.

Under the new terms, MDA Space will manufacture a total of 225 satellites for the constellation, an increase of 27 units over the previous order of 198. Beyond the hardware increase, the contract specifies the addition of 500 MHz of military Ka-band spectrum to satellites currently under construction, replacing an equivalent amount of commercial Ka-band spectrum. These satellites are being produced at the company's high-volume manufacturing facility located in Montréal.

Strategic Arctic Connectivity

This expansion is tied to a broader Strategic Partnership Agreement involving Telesat and the Canadian Department of National Defence. The collaboration is centered on the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project-Polar (ESCP-P) program, which aims to provide critical connectivity across the Canadian Arctic. As part of this wider initiative, MDA Space is also serving as the prime contractor for a secure UHF and X-band constellation in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), with Telesat acting as a subcontractor.

Implications for Sovereignty and Defense

The shift toward military-grade spectrum and increased satellite density underscores the growing requirement for secure, dual-use broadband infrastructure in high-latitude regions. According to MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley, reliable military communication in the Arctic is essential for protecting Canadian sovereignty, maintaining situational awareness, and coordinating joint operations with allies. The ability to respond quickly to emergencies in the Arctic is a primary driver for the project, as the region presents unique geographical and logistical challenges for traditional communications.

Future Outlook

Industry observers will now look toward the deployment phase of the expanded Lightspeed constellation to see how the integration of military Ka-band spectrum performs in operational environments. While the manufacturing scale-up in Montréal is underway, the success of the ESCP-P program will likely serve as a blueprint for how LEO constellations can be adapted to meet the specific sovereignty and defense needs of Arctic nations.
