NAE Honors Sethuraman Panchanathan with 2026 Arthur M. Bueche Award

The former NSF director is the first Indian American and first Arizonan to receive the honor for leadership in science and technology policy.

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has named Sethuraman Panchanathan the recipient of the 2026 Arthur M. Bueche Award. The honor recognizes Panchanathan's extensive leadership in U.S. science and technology policy and his work strengthening ties between government, industry, and academic institutions.

Panchanathan, a University Professor at Arizona State University, makes history as the first Indian American and the first Arizonan to receive the award in its more than 40-year history. The NAE cited his ability to bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical application as a primary driver for the recognition. ASU President Michael M. Crow described Panchanathan as one of the country's most remarkable "systems thinkers," noting that he is essential in the room when large-scale national problems require solving.

A Career in Policy and Innovation

Panchanathan's influence on the American scientific landscape is most evident in his tenure as the 15th director of the National Science Foundation (NSF). While leading the agency, he established the first new directorate in over 30 years, a strategic move designed specifically to accelerate translational science and technology. This initiative aimed to move discoveries out of the lab and into real-world economic and societal applications more efficiently.

His career has been marked by a dual presence in high-level government administration and academia. Beyond his role at the NSF, he has served as a key leader at Arizona State University. His contributions to the field have earned him global recognition, including his election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2024 and the receipt of the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, in 2025. University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella noted that Panchanathan possesses a rare combination of scientific vision and a commitment to expanding opportunity.
