NASA Abandons Rescue of Swift Telescope After Spacecraft Failure
A $30 million attempt to save the aging observatory from a decaying orbit failed after the rescue craft suffered uncontrollable spinning.
NASA and Katalyst Space Technologies have canceled a mission to rescue the Swift Observatory from a decaying orbit, leaving the telescope to burn up in Earth's atmosphere later this year. The decision follows critical technical failures aboard the rescue spacecraft, Link, which rendered the operation impossible.
According to NASA, the rescue spacecraft Link experienced an uncontrollable spin and pointing issues a few weeks after its launch in July 2026. These positioning failures meant the craft could not capture the telescope to boost it to a safer altitude. NASA paid approximately $30 million to the startup Katalyst Space Technologies for the attempt. While the mission ended in failure, Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee stated the company was proud of the milestones reached during the "high-risk, high-reward challenge."
The Decay of a Veteran Observatory
Launched on Nov. 20, 2004, the Swift Observatory was originally designed for a modest two-year mission. Instead, it operated for over 20 years, providing critical data on exploding stars and gamma-ray bursts. However, the telescope began losing altitude due to atmospheric drag, a process accelerated by intense solar activity that heated the upper atmosphere. Because Swift lacks its own thrusters to counteract this pull, it began sinking faster than expected, prompting NASA to seek an external orbital boost.
Implications for Orbital Salvage
This failure marks the end of a highly productive era of discovery, but it also raises questions about the viability of using startup-led rescue missions for aging satellites. The inability to stabilize the Link spacecraft highlights the extreme technical risks associated with orbital docking and maneuvering for assets not originally designed for such interventions. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted that while this was not the intended outcome, the mission was still worth attempting.
Future Outlook
Beyond the loss of Swift, the failure casts uncertainty on future plans for other critical space assets. The Hubble Space Telescope was considered a potential candidate for a similar orbital boost rescue had the Swift mission succeeded. With the Link spacecraft unable to perform its primary task, the strategy for extending the life of Hubble via third-party rescue remains unconfirmed. For now, the scientific community awaits the final reentry of Swift as it plunges toward Earth.
