According to research published in Nature Astronomy by Bruce Jakosky and Christopher Edwards, the primary obstacle is a critical lack of accessible carbon dioxide. The 2018 study found that even if all available CO2 on Mars were released into the atmosphere, the resulting pressure would only reach about 7% of Earth's. Currently, the Martian atmosphere is composed of approximately 95% carbon dioxide, but its surface pressure remains less than 1% of Earth's sea level pressure. This deficit makes it impossible to thicken the atmosphere enough to warm the surface or support liquid water.
The Martian Environment
Terraforming is the theoretical process of modifying a planet's atmosphere and temperature to make it habitable for Earth-based life. However, the physical reality of Mars presents extreme barriers. The average surface temperature on the planet hovers around minus 60 degrees Celsius, creating a frozen wasteland that cannot be naturally warmed without a significant greenhouse effect.
Beyond temperature and pressure issues, Mars lacks a global magnetic field. This absence leaves the surface exposed to high levels of cosmic radiation. Data from the Curiosity rover has measured surface radiation doses of roughly 0.7 millisieverts per day, a level that poses significant health risks to unprotected humans.

The research clarifies that the transition to a breathable, Earth-like environment is not a matter of simple planetary engineering, but a barrier that current technology cannot overcome.
