NASA Science Chief Celebrates Surge in Women STEM Graduates

Dr. Nicola Fox contrasts today's physics and engineering classes with her 1991 experience as one of four women in a cohort of 200.

Dr. Nicola Fox, who leads NASA's Science Mission Directorate, witnessed a transformation at recent physics and engineering graduations: rows of female graduates receiving their degrees, a stark departure from her own experience three decades ago.

"I was at the physics graduation and the engineering graduation," Fox said during a return to the University of Surrey. "It was amazing to see the number of girls that were graduating."

From One of Four to Majority

In 1991, Fox earned her MSc in Telematics and Satellite Engineering at Surrey as one of only four women in a cohort exceeding 200 students. The gender imbalance defined her early academic environment, yet she credits her preparation to St Francis' College in Letchworth, a private all-girls school where she studied before university.

The single-sex education shielded her from pervasive gender stereotypes that discouraged women from pursuing technical fields. "If somebody says girls don't do that, then that's just not true," Fox said.

Her message carries weight beyond personal anecdote. Appointed Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in February 2023, Fox now oversees the agency's scientific portfolio and serves as a visible example of women reaching the highest levels of space science leadership.

Progress Meets Persistent Gap

The pipeline is filling, but the destination remains distant. According to STEM Women's 2024 whitepaper, women comprise just 26% of the UK STEM workforce. At current rates, parity remains decades away despite improved enrollment and graduation rates.

Fox's career trajectory illustrates both the progress made and the work ahead. From her isolated position in a 1991 engineering classroom to commanding NASA's science programs, she represents what becomes possible when barriers fall — and what remains necessary to ensure the next generation faces fewer of them.

The contrast between her 1991 cohort and today's graduation halls marks genuine advancement. Yet the workforce statistics remind that classroom gains have not yet translated into equal representation across scientific careers. Fox's visibility at NASA signals change, but systemic parity requires sustained effort beyond individual success stories.
