Northrop Grumman Repurposes Canceled Gateway Tech for Lunar Base
Hardware from the HALO module will power three new demo missions to accelerate Artemis surface infrastructure.
Northrop Grumman is repurposing critical technology from the canceled Gateway lunar orbital space station to accelerate the construction of a permanent moon base. The shift aims to fast-track the development of surface infrastructure under a restructured Artemis program timeline.
To facilitate this transition, the company will integrate electrical, mechanical, power, and data interfaces from the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module into a new series of Lunar Infrastructure Demo (LID) missions. These three specific missions—LID-1, LID-2, and LID-3—are designed to mature the systems necessary for long-term human habitation on the lunar surface. According to Northrop Grumman, utilizing these ready-to-fly interfaces allows NASA to begin gathering real lunar surface performance data sooner than previously possible.
A Strategic Pivot
This technical pivot follows a broader restructuring of the Artemis program announced in March by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. The shakeup was intended to implement a more incremental, step-by-step approach to crewed landings. Under the current schedule, the first Artemis mission to put astronauts on the lunar surface is slated for Artemis IV in early 2028.
The overarching goal of the Artemis program is to establish a sustainable human presence at the lunar south pole. This region is of particular interest due to the abundance of water ice, which is essential for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). By harvesting this ice, NASA intends to produce potable water, create radiation shielding, and manufacture rocket fuel on-site, effectively using the Moon as a technological proving ground for eventual crewed missions to Mars.
Overcoming the Lunar Night
Moving from an orbital station concept to surface-focused infrastructure reflects an urgent need for speed in the current geopolitical space race, particularly against China. The primary technical hurdle for any permanent base is the extreme cold of the lunar night, which can destroy unshielded electronics and life-support systems.
David Schiller, Northrop Grumman's vice president of civil space and sciences, stated that the reliable HALO technologies provide a "robust infrastructure that can endure the lunar night," creating a blueprint for the future base. By testing these systems via the LID missions, NASA can verify how power and data interfaces perform in the harshest lunar environments before committing crews to the surface.
The Path to 2028
As NASA moves toward the Artemis IV landing, the success of the LID series will be critical in determining the viability of the permanent base. While the orbital Gateway project has been sidelined, the reuse of its components ensures that years of engineering work are not wasted. Observers will now watch for the specific launch windows of LID-1 through LID-3 to see how quickly these repurposed systems can be deployed to the lunar south pole.
