PhilSA unveils 'Yamang Kalawakan' vision to scale Philippine space economy

The Philippine Space Agency is shifting from data consumption to active value creation through a new human-centric space ecosystem.

The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) has introduced "Yamang Kalawakan," a strategic vision designed to transform the country into an active participant in the global space value chain. Unveiled during the second annual Philippine Space Week ending August 14, 2026, the initiative focuses on building a local ecosystem of talent and innovation to generate tangible societal value.

Acting Director General Gay Jane Perez framed "Yamang Kalawakan" (Space Wealth) not as physical assets, but as the human capital driving the sector. According to Perez, this includes the teachers, researchers, engineers, and students who push the boundaries of knowledge. She emphasized that PhilSA's primary responsibility is to ensure the Philippines is ready with the necessary knowledge and confidence to integrate into the international space economy.

Expanding Operational Capabilities

As part of the "Navigating Tomorrow" theme, PhilSA launched OpenDronePH, a public repository providing open-access drone imagery. The platform is intended to bolster national efforts in environmental monitoring, mapping, and disaster risk reduction. The agency also announced the Analog Habitat Waypoint (Anahaw) Mission, which will see an eight-member crew conduct a 24-hour simulated space mission at Batangas State University this September.

To foster future talent, the agency introduced the "Patalasan sa #YamangKalawakan" challenge, inviting high school students to develop experiments for testing at the University of the Philippines Diliman's full anechoic chamber facility by September 27. Additionally, the agency held a Space Law Essay Writing Contest to solicit proposals for domestic legal frameworks regarding the welfare of Filipino astronauts.

From Research to Ecosystem

This strategic shift follows a decade of growth that began with the launch of Diwata-1, the country's first microsatellite, which celebrated its 10th anniversary during the event. While early efforts under the PHL-Microsat and STAMINA4Space programs were primarily academic, the passage of the Philippine Space Act (RA 11363) and the subsequent establishment of PhilSA have transitioned the nation toward operational programs.

Recent efforts to commercialize this technology include the Space Business Innovation Camp, which paired startups and entrepreneurs to explore commercial applications for space data. On the international front, the CopPhil initiative now links Philippine agencies with European partners to utilize Earth-observation data for climate action and disaster management.

Global Integration and Future Outlook

Moving beyond regional efforts, the Philippines has solidified its commitment to international standards of exploration. The country signed the Artemis Accords on October 27, 2025, during the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia—a milestone later highlighted at the 31st Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum in Cebu in November 2025.

By transitioning from a consumer of space data to a producer of innovation, the Philippines aims to enhance its national security and climate resilience. The success of the Yamang Kalawakan vision will depend on the agency's ability to sustain this pipeline of talent and successfully bridge the gap between government research and commercial viability.
