Sandeep Kumar to Lead Texas Tech Plant and Soil Science Department
Former USDA national program leader brings federal funding expertise and soil health research to the university.
Texas Tech University has appointed Sandeep Kumar as the chair of the Department of Plant and Soil Science, effective September 1, 2026. The appointment brings a veteran of federal agricultural administration and academic research to lead one of the university's critical scientific hubs.
Kumar transitions to the role from the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA), where he served as a national program leader within the Institute of Bioenergy, Climate & Environment. In that capacity, he managed federal funding dedicated to agricultural sustainability and soil health. At Texas Tech, Kumar will oversee a department of approximately 330 undergraduate and graduate students. His leadership extends to several specialized entities, including the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation, the Fiber & Biopolymer Research Institute, and the Institute of Genomics for Crop Abiotic Stress Tolerance (IGCAST).
Academic and Professional Background
Kumar’s appointment follows a career defined by a blend of high-level administration and technical research. He holds a doctorate in soils and a graduate certificate in GIS from the University of Missouri, having previously earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University. His professional standing was further recognized in 2025, when he was elected as a Fellow of both the American Society of Agronomy and the Soil Science Society of America.
Beyond his administrative roles, Kumar has conducted academic research at The Ohio State University and South Dakota State University. His work focuses on carbon storage and soil health, specifically utilizing advanced imaging techniques such as X-ray computed tomography to study the efficacy of no-till farming and cover crops.

The appointment is a strategic win for the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. According to Dean Clint Krehbiel, Kumar provides "visionary leadership" and a "proven record of translating science into practical solutions for farmers."
