Saudi Arabia is moving to establish the world's first AI-driven national logistics network by deploying thousands of autonomous trucks across its smart corridors. The initiative, highlighted during the LEAP 2026 technology event in Riyadh, signals a massive shift in how the Kingdom intends to manage its internal supply chains.

At the center of this push is a partnership between the Saudi AI firm HUMAIN and US-based Applied Intuition. The two companies aim to deploy thousands of autonomous trucks by 2030, a move designed to position the Gulf region as a global leader in large-scale autonomous logistics. According to HUMAIN CEO Tareq Amin, the objective is for the Gulf to be the world leader in the large-scale deployment of these vehicles.

The Vision 2030 Mandate

This deployment is a critical component of Saudi Arabia's broader Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the national economy and integrate cutting-edge technology into industrial infrastructure. Specifically, the government has set a target to equip 25% of all freight transport vehicles with autonomous-driving technologies.

The scale of the challenge is significant. The Saudi trucking sector currently comprises more than 500,000 trucks operated by approximately 18,000 licensed companies. Transitioning a quarter of this fleet to autonomous systems would represent one of the most aggressive technological pivots in the history of global logistics.

Global Implications

While autonomous trucking is already being pursued by firms such as Aurora, Gatik, and Kodiak in the United States, as well as various players in Japan, Saudi Arabia's ambition differs in scale. If the Kingdom successfully puts thousands of autonomous vehicles on public roads, it would create the largest operation of its kind globally.

Success in this venture would fundamentally alter the economics of regional trade by significantly reducing labor costs and increasing overall supply chain efficiency. By automating the movement of goods across its vast geography, Saudi Arabia aims to create a seamless, AI-managed corridor that reduces human error and optimizes transit times.

The Road Ahead

Despite the technical ambitions, the path to a driverless fleet is fraught with non-technical obstacles. The Kingdom must now develop comprehensive regulatory frameworks and liability laws to govern autonomous vehicles on public highways. Furthermore, the transition to a centralized digital fleet introduces substantial cybersecurity risks that must be mitigated to prevent systemic disruptions.

Observers will be watching for the first phase of corridor deployments to see if the partnership between HUMAIN and Applied Intuition can translate theoretical AI capabilities into the harsh environmental and operational realities of the Saudi desert.
