South Korea's Top Science Institutes Launch Startup Arms to Scale Deep-Tech

South Korea's four premier science and technology institutes—KAIST, GIST, DGIST, and UNIST—have established dedicated startup organizations to accelerate the transition of academic research into commercial ventures. The initiative aims to dismantle traditional bottlenecks that prevent core laboratory technologies from reaching industrial application.

As part of this systemic shift, the institutes are transforming research labs into ventures and implementing policies such as unlimited leaves of absence for student entrepreneurs. A primary success story emerging from this ecosystem is Point2 Technology, a KAIST spinoff that has secured a cumulative $136 million in funding following a Series B extension. Point2 Technology is a leading Korean-founded startup to receive strategic investments from both Nvidia and Arm.

The Interconnect Bottleneck

The strategic interest from global chip giants centers on Point2 Technology's "e-Tube" platform. The technology utilizes RF signals over plastic waveguides to address critical infrastructure challenges in AI data centers. By replacing traditional wiring, the e-Tube system reduces power consumption and costs to one-third of those associated with optical cables, while significantly reducing latency compared to copper wiring.

Park Jin-ho, CEO of Point2 Technology, noted that as AI systems scale, interconnectivity has become a primary bottleneck. He stated that the investment from Arm and other partners indicates the e-Tube platform is emerging as a core interconnect solution for the next-generation "AI data factory."

Scaling the Deep-Tech Ecosystem

The push for commercialization extends beyond semiconductors. Recens Medical, a medical device company affiliated with UNIST, successfully listed on the KOSDAQ market in March 2026, demonstrating the viability of the faculty-led startup model across different scientific disciplines.

This movement represents a broader national strategy to secure a position in the global AI supply chain. By institutionalizing the startup support model—which was previously concentrated at KAIST—across all four major science institutes, South Korea is attempting to create a repeatable pipeline for high-growth deep-tech companies.

The validation of Point2 Technology by Nvidia and Arm signals that South Korean academic spinoffs are now producing hardware solutions capable of meeting the rigorous demands of global AI infrastructure.
