Space Force Integrates Digital and Live Ranges for Contested Space Training
Space Systems Command is leveraging the NITE-STAR contract to build a unified test infrastructure for Guardians.
The U.S. Space Force is accelerating the development of next-generation test and training technology to ensure operational readiness in increasingly contested orbital environments. Through Space Systems Command (SSC), the service is modernizing how it validates space systems and prepares personnel for high-stakes conflict.
At the center of this effort is the Operational Test and Training Infrastructure (OTTI). Overseen by System Delta 81 within SSC, this initiative aims to integrate digital, cyber, and live test and training ranges into a single, unified system. To accelerate the delivery of these capabilities, the Space Force is utilizing the NITE-STAR (National Space Test and Training Complex Innovative Technology & Engineering – Space Test and Range) contract vehicle, which streamlines the acquisition-to-activity pipeline.
This modernization is critical as the Space Force transitions into a fully operational force. Unlike traditional air or land domains, space operations require specialized high-fidelity simulations to mimic the complexities of orbital mechanics and electronic warfare. As the service matures, legacy testing methods are being replaced by agile, integrated environments capable of simulating adversary interference in real time.
Maintaining a competitive edge in space now depends on the ability to iterate tactics and technology rapidly. By leveraging advanced simulation and the OTTI framework, the USSF can test new capabilities without relying exclusively on expensive and risky live-fire or orbital tests. This digital-first approach allows the service to respond more quickly to the development of counter-space capabilities by adversaries, reducing the time between a technological breakthrough and its operational deployment.
As the NITE-STAR contract continues to drive engineering and technology integration, the Space Force will focus on scaling these simulated environments. The primary objective remains the seamless blending of virtual and physical ranges to create a comprehensive training ecosystem. The full integration of these disparate ranges into the OTTI system will ultimately determine how significantly the service can reduce the timeline for fielding new space assets.
