Stratolaunch has announced that its Talon-A hypersonic flight test platform has completed more than 10 successful hypersonic flights. This milestone demonstrates the reliability of a reusable, autonomous system designed to test aerodynamics and materials at extreme speeds.
The Talon-A is a fully autonomous, air-launched vehicle capable of reaching speeds of at least Mach 6. To achieve these velocities, the platform is deployed from massive carrier aircraft, including the Spirit of Mojave and the Roc, the latter of which holds the record for the world's largest wingspan. By utilizing these motherships, Stratolaunch launches the vehicle into the upper atmosphere before it accelerates to hypersonic speeds—defined as Mach 5 or faster.
