Tamil Nadu Startup Cosmicport Builds Indigenous Reusable Methalox Engines

Cosmicport, a Thoothukudi-based space-tech startup, is developing indigenous reusable rocket engines—bypassing the industry norm of purchasing existing propulsion systems.

The company's Cryonix engine uses methane-oxygen (methalox) propellant, designed for rapid turnaround and multi-mission operations. Nine Cryonix engines will power Mach Blue, a small-lift launch vehicle aimed at delivering cost-effective access to Low Earth Orbit.

Strategic Location

Cosmicport's headquarters sit approximately 50 kilometers from the Kulasekharapatnam launchport, positioning the company near India's newest space infrastructure. The proximity could streamline logistics and reduce transportation costs for future launches.

Development Roadmap

Cosmicport plans to achieve its cryogenic engine milestone in 2026, followed by a reusability demonstration in 2027. Stage qualification is scheduled for 2028, with commercial launches targeted for 2029.

The startup completed sub-scale fire testing in January 2025 and announced its first cryogenic ignition trials in July 2026. Founded in 2023, Cosmicport participated in the AWS Space Accelerator India program in 2024.

Business Model

Unlike competitors that separate engine procurement from launch services, Cosmicport plans to sell engine development and launch services as a single integrated package. This vertical integration approach mirrors established players like SpaceX, whose Raptor engine also uses methalox propellant.

Why Methalox Matters

Methane-oxygen engines burn cleaner than traditional kerosene-based fuels, producing less soot and carbon buildup. This makes them better suited for reuse, as engines require less refurbishment between flights. The global shift toward methalox propulsion reflects the industry's focus on reducing costs through hardware reusability.

Market Context

India's private space sector has seen a surge in launch startups over the past two years. Most rely on purchasing existing engines from international suppliers or adapting legacy designs. Cosmicport's decision to build its own propulsion system from the ground up represents a higher-risk, higher-reward strategy that could yield greater long-term control over costs and performance.

If successful, indigenous reusable methalox engines would significantly lower satellite deployment costs for Indian and international operators. By reducing the need to replace hardware after every flight and leveraging its strategic location near Kulasekharapatnam, Cosmicport aims to make sustained access to space more scalable and sustainable.

The company's progress will be closely watched as India continues to expand its commercial space capabilities and compete in the global small-satellite launch market.
