Temple University Launches STEMM Outreach to Bridge Philadelphia Education Gap
A new mobile laboratory and teacher collaborative bring science and medicine education directly to underserved local schools.
Temple University has launched a new community outreach initiative focused on STEMM—science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine—to better integrate academic resources with the local Philadelphia community. The program aims to provide underserved residents and students with direct access to technical education and career pathways.
The initiative officially began on Saturday, August 29, 2026, with a Back-to-School STEMM Fair. According to Temple Now, the event drew more than 200 participants representing 33 different schools. The program is a joint effort between Temple University's College of Science and Technology (CST) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME).
Expanding Academic Access
Temple University has a long-standing history of engaging in community outreach within Philadelphia. These efforts are specifically designed to bridge the gap between the university's high-level academic resources and the needs of local residents, particularly those in underserved areas where access to advanced technical training may be limited.
To move beyond traditional campus-based learning, the initiative features a "STEMM bus." This mobile laboratory is designed to travel directly to local schools, bringing hands-on science education to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to visit a university lab. Complementing the mobile unit is a "Teacher Collaborative," a professional network where local educators work together to develop specialized curricula specifically for use with the STEMM bus.
