The Exploration Company raises $450M to build Europe's reusable space fleet

The startup aims to secure orbital sovereignty with the Nyx reusable capsule and the Storm high-thrust rocket engine.

The Exploration Company (TEC) has secured $450 million in Series C funding to accelerate the development of reusable space transportation infrastructure. The investment marks a critical step in Europe's effort to establish independent, heavy-lift access to orbit.

Co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico, and the Scaleup Europe Fund—managed by EQT—the funding round is the largest-ever Series C raised by a European space company. This latest injection brings TEC's total funding to approximately $680 million. The company has already demonstrated significant market demand, securing more than $2 billion in contracts and commitments from a global mix of public and private sector customers, with 10 missions for its Nyx capsule already booked.

Scaling Sovereign Transport

Founded by Hélène Huby, TEC is designing a logistics ecosystem intended to reduce European reliance on external providers like SpaceX. The primary focus of the new capital is the development of the Nyx reusable space capsule and the Storm high-thrust rocket engine. The Storm engine is particularly notable for utilizing a full-flow stage combustion cycle, making it the first of its kind developed by a European firm. Together, these technologies are intended to provide a reusable heavy-lift capability, targeting a payload capacity of 40 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Push for Orbital Sovereignty

This strategic expansion comes as a gap in orbital delivery capacity emerges. As SpaceX increasingly prioritizes its Falcon rockets for the deployment of Starlink satellites, European entities face growing challenges in securing reliable launch windows. By developing its own heavy-lift launcher, TEC aims to provide the necessary infrastructure for the next generation of space-based data centers, scientific research stations, and broadband communications networks.

"This financing will allow us to execute with urgency: to bring Nyx to the International Space Station and safely back to Earth, while accelerating Storm, the high-thrust propulsion capability Europe needs for its future reusable heavy launcher," said Hélène Huby, Founder and CEO of The Exploration Company.

Future Milestones

Industry observers are now watching for the first flight tests of the Storm engine and the initial deployment of the Nyx capsule to the International Space Station. While the company has secured a massive pipeline of commitments, the successful transition from design to operational heavy-lift capability remains the primary hurdle. The outcome of these developments will determine whether Europe can successfully decouple its space logistics from American commercial dominance.
