Toronto's Canada Rocket Company Aims for Sovereign Space Access by 2028
Backed by $6.2M in seed funding and SpaceX alumni, CRC is building reusable methalox rockets to end Canada's reliance on foreign launch providers.
Toronto-based startup Canada Rocket Company (CRC) has emerged from stealth with a mission to establish sovereign light- and medium-lift launch capabilities for Canada. The move signals a strategic push for national autonomy in space access, reducing the country's long-term reliance on foreign launch providers.
To fuel this ambition, CRC raised $6.2 million CDN ($4.5 million USD) in a seed funding round. The round was co-led by BDC and Garage Capital, with additional participation from Ripple Ventures, Panache Ventures, Northside Ventures, and Cold Capital. The company is building its technical foundation around a reusable methalox rocket architecture and a leadership team with deep industry experience. Among the recruits are CTO David Tenny, who spent nearly a decade as a propulsion engineer at SpaceX, and Head of Avionics Eric Kupp, a former SpaceX lead avionics engineer with over six years at the company.
The Push for Strategic Autonomy
Canada has historically depended on external providers, primarily U.S.-based companies like SpaceX, to deploy its assets into orbit. However, shifting geopolitical dynamics and concerns over trade tariffs have prompted the Canadian government to prioritize strategic autonomy. This shift is evidenced by record contributions to the European Space Agency (ESA) and the creation of the "Launch the North" challenge. This government initiative offers $105 million CDN in public funding to companies that can demonstrate the ability to reach Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by 2028.
Industry Implications
Establishing a domestic launch capability is critical for Canada's national security and economic competitiveness. By controlling the means of delivery, Canada can ensure more reliable and timely access to space for government and commercial payloads without being subject to the scheduling or political constraints of foreign entities. CEO Hugh Kolias emphasized the need for speed and efficiency in this race, stating that companies must move fast enough to stay ahead of global competition while remaining economically viable.
The Road to 2028
CRC is now racing to meet the strict 2028 deadline set by the "Launch the North" challenge. While the company has secured its initial funding and core engineering talent, the primary hurdle remains the rapid development and testing of its reusable methalox systems. Observers will be watching for milestones in engine testing and prototype flights as CRC attempts to bridge the technological gap and secure a portion of the available public funding to finalize its sovereign launch infrastructure.
