U.S. Computer Science Enrollment Drops 8% in First Decline Since Dot-Com Bust
National Student Clearinghouse data shows undergraduate and graduate CS programs shrinking as students recalibrate expectations about tech careers.
Undergraduate enrollment in computer science programs at U.S. four-year colleges fell 8.1% in Fall 2025, marking the first sustained decline in approximately two decades, according to data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.
The drop from roughly 659,700 students in 2024 to 606,100 in 2025 ends a period of consistent growth that persisted even through the early-2000s dot-com crash. Graduate enrollment contracted faster, declining 14.0% over the same period.
UC System Mirrors National Trend
The University of California system experienced a 6% drop in undergraduate computer science majors in 2025, following a 3% decline the previous year. The two-year contraction totals 9%, leaving approximately 12,652 undergraduates currently majoring in the field across UC campuses.
Multiple Factors at Play
Stanford economist Jacob Light, whose research confirmed the enrollment reversal, cautioned against attributing the decline to any single cause. Light identified five possible explanations: a weaker tech job market, uncertainty about the value of a CS degree, weaker academic preparation among incoming students, demographic changes, and the expansion of competing fields like data science.
While the timing coincides with widespread adoption of generative AI tools, Light's analysis treats the patterns as descriptive rather than establishing causal effect.
End of the 'Safe Bet' Era
For twenty years, computer science represented a reliable path to high-paying employment. The sector's hypergrowth attracted students seeking economic security, even as other humanities and social science fields faced enrollment pressures.
The current correction suggests students are recalibrating their expectations about returns on investment in tech education. Whether this reflects a temporary adjustment to AI disruption or a longer-term shift in how software development skills are acquired remains unclear.
If the decline persists beyond the 2025 academic year, it could signal that traditional computer science degrees are losing their status as the default credential for technology careers. Some students may be pivoting toward more specialized AI-focused programs, while others may conclude that AI tools have lowered barriers to entry enough that formal degrees matter less.
