UC San Diego Chemist Mark Thiemens Wins America's Oldest Science Prize

The American Philosophical Society awarded the Magellanic Premium to Thiemens for transformative research spanning the origins of the universe and environmental protection.

Mark Thiemens, a professor of chemistry at UC San Diego, has been awarded the Magellanic Premium by the American Philosophical Society. The honor recognizes researchers whose work fundamentally shifts the scientific understanding of the natural world.

Thiemens becomes only the 43rd recipient of the award in its 240-year history. Described as the oldest science prize in the United States, the Magellanic Premium is reserved for research that is fundamental in nature. Patrick Spero, CEO of the American Philosophical Society, noted that the decision to honor Thiemens was "absolutely unanimous," citing the transformative impact of his career.

Redefining Earth's Origins

Thiemens' work is characterized by its breadth, bridging the gap between astrophysics and environmental science through the study of isotopes. One of his most significant contributions was the discovery of mass-independent isotope fractionation (MIF).

Before this discovery, certain chemical patterns found on meteorites were widely assumed to be the result of exploding stars, or supernovae. Thiemens' research demonstrated that these features could instead be created by specific chemical processes. This finding shifted long-standing scientific assumptions regarding the chemical evolution of the early solar system and the origins of Earth.

From Space to Sustainability

While his work reached back to the dawn of the universe, Thiemens applied the same isotopic analysis to urgent modern environmental crises. In the 1990s, his research focused on the sources of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas.

Thiemens identified that the production of adipic acid, a key component in the manufacturing of nylon, was responsible for 30% of all manmade nitrous oxide emissions. This concrete data provided a direct path for industrial mitigation. Following these findings, the chemical company Dupont altered its nylon manufacturing process, resulting in a significant reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. Reflecting on the impact of this work, Thiemens stated, "I can’t think of a paper that led to a change in climate species more than that."

A Legacy of Application

The award highlights a rare trajectory in modern science: the ability to move from theoretical astrophysics to practical industrial reform. By utilizing isotope analysis to track atoms across both meteorites and atmospheric gases, Thiemens provided the scientific community with new tools to understand both the distant past and the immediate future of the planet.

As the scientific community continues to grapple with climate change and the mysteries of planetary formation, Thiemens' dual legacy serves as a model for how fundamental chemistry can drive both academic discovery and global environmental policy.
