UK invests £13 million to advance next-gen satellite communications

New funding for 16 projects aims to integrate space technology into 5G/6G networks and rural infrastructure.

The UK government has launched a £13 million investment programme to fund 16 new projects designed to advance satellite communications and digital connectivity. Supported by the UK Space Agency, the initiative aims to strengthen national security and expand high-value employment by integrating space-based assets with terrestrial networks.

Delivered through the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Advanced Research in Telecommunication Systems (ARTES) programme, the funding targets the development of 5G and 6G network access. Specific projects include the development of ultra-quick optical communications for satellite data relay networks, led by Exobotics Ltd through the STARS project. Additionally, Airbus Defence and Space UK Ltd is working on the Theia project, which focuses on software-defined radio processors that enable satellites to be reprogrammed while already in orbit. On the terrestrial side, the GAUFF project by Farmer Charlie is developing affordable satellite-enabled sensors to provide real-time agricultural data.

Modernizing National Infrastructure

This investment arrives as the UK attempts to solidify its status as a global space power by expanding its capabilities into deep space and lunar communications. A primary objective of the current funding round is the elimination of connectivity dead zones on mainland train routes, including trials for satellite broadband on remote Scottish railways such as the West Highland Line. By bridging these gaps, the government intends to modernize agricultural productivity through the Internet of Things (IoT) and improve the passenger experience on remote transit corridors.

Economic and Industrial Impact

Moving toward software-defined satellites and optical communications is critical for reducing the long-term cost of satellite operations. These technologies increase the adaptability of orbital assets, allowing them to evolve without requiring physical hardware replacements. The strategic focus on transport and agriculture demonstrates a shift toward practical, terrestrial applications of space technology to drive immediate economic growth. According to industry data, the UK space sector already contributes £18.6 billion annually to the national economy and employs more than 55,000 people.

Future Outlook

As these 16 projects move into development, the industry will be watching for the successful integration of satellite data into standard 5G and 6G frameworks. The ability to reprogram satellites in-orbit via the Theia project could fundamentally change how the UK manages its orbital infrastructure. While the immediate focus remains on domestic connectivity and agricultural efficiency, these advancements lay the groundwork for more complex deep-space communication networks in the coming decade.
