UK launches £7.8bn national space strategy to bolster security and growth
The 2030 roadmap integrates defense and industry to protect critical infrastructure and reindustrialize the UK space sector.
The UK government launched a new national space strategy on September 8, 2026, underpinned by a £7.8 billion investment plan running through 2030. The initiative integrates space activities across science, transport, industry, and defense to drive economic growth and strengthen national security.
Replacing the 2021 National Space Strategy, the framework aligns with the government's Modern Industrial Strategy to reindustrialize the UK. A significant portion of the funding targets security, with over £3 billion dedicated to military space capabilities via the Defence Investment Plan. An additional £2.8 billion is allocated for connectivity, specifically supporting the SKYNET defense communications and Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (CLEO) programmes. To track satellite attacks and military activity, the government is investing £880 million in space control and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
Strengthening Orbital Awareness
As space becomes a primary domain for military and economic competition, the UK is prioritizing "Space Domain Awareness" to protect critical infrastructure from solar storms and orbital threats. This effort includes £149 million for the ESA Vigil mission and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre.
Beyond surveillance, the strategy focuses on physical infrastructure. The government has allocated £60 million to finalize the SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland, a project that includes £30 million in private sector investment. This push for "Assured Access to Space" aims to reduce reliance on foreign launch capabilities and support a domestic supply chain.
Economic and Regulatory Shift
The strategy arrives as the UK space sector reaches a valuation of £18.6 billion, supporting more than 55,000 skilled jobs. To maintain this momentum, the government is shifting toward a "single approach" for the procurement and development of space technology.
To attract private capital, the plan introduces regulatory reforms, including variable liability limits and specific waivers for innovative missions—such as lunar exploration and In-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM)—launched before 2030. These changes are intended to lower financial barriers for UK firms entering high-risk, high-reward orbital markets.
Strategic Implications
This transition represents a scaling of ambition, moving from fragmented departmental projects to a unified national industrial strategy. By consolidating its approach, the UK aims to lead in the emerging ISAM field while securing the navigation, power, and communication services the public relies on daily.
Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated the plan will help keep Britain secure by strengthening the ability to launch satellites and detect threats. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting added that national security now depends on "freedom of action in space" and the ability to protect allied assets.
