UK Ministry of Defence funded secret research into 'sun-dimming' technology
Freedom of information requests reveal military-funded study into solar radiation management to inform frontline commands.
The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has funded research into "sun-dimming" technologies designed to reflect sunlight away from Earth, according to documents obtained through freedom of information requests. The revelation marks the first time it has been disclosed that UK security services are paying for active research into solar radiation management (SRM).
The MoD's research arm, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), contracted Cambridge Consultants Ltd to study SRM, cloud-brightening, and stratospheric aerosol injection. Codenamed "Astrid Task 451," the project was overseen by BAE Systems. The research contract began in the summer of 2025, with a final report delivered on December 8 and a subsequent contract extension that concluded in March. According to the technical proposal, the research was intended to "inform FLCs," referring to the military's frontline commands.
The Geoengineering Landscape
Solar Radiation Management aims to cool the planet by mimicking the effects of volcanic eruptions, reflecting a portion of solar radiation back into space to combat extreme global heating. While the UK government officially opposes the actual deployment of SRM, it remains a significant sponsor of geoengineering research. This includes a £56.8 million grant programme announced by the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA) in 2025.
Despite the scientific interest, SRM remains deeply controversial. Critics warn of unknown environmental side effects and the risk of triggering geopolitical conflicts or a "technological race" for temperature control, as different nations may disagree on the ideal global thermostat setting.
Strategic Security Implications
The involvement of military planners suggests that the UK government views geoengineering as a strategic security issue rather than a purely scientific endeavor. This shift in focus has raised concerns regarding transparency and the absence of global governance for technologies that could fundamentally alter the planet's climate.
Erin Sikorsky, a former US intelligence officer and director of the Center for Climate and Security, stated that it is not surprising that defense and security agencies are interested in "threat assessment or horizon scanning" of the SRM space, adding that she believes they should be. However, others argue that such research should not happen in the shadows. Cynthia Scharf, a former adviser to former UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, argued that the issue should be discussed publicly across government ministries rather than by military planners hiring external consultants, noting that the current approach "undermines transparency and trust."
Future Outlook
As the MoD concludes this specific contract, the focus now shifts to how this intelligence will be integrated into frontline military planning. It remains unclear whether "Astrid Task 451" will lead to further classified research or if the UK will move toward a more transparent, multilateral framework for managing the security risks associated with climate intervention technologies.
