University of Macau Launches Five S&T Faculties to Drive Regional Innovation

The University of Macau (UM) launched five new science and technology faculties and two research institutes on August 1, 2026. This sweeping restructuring is designed to amplify the university's innovation capacity and support the regional shift toward a high-tech economy.

The expansion introduces the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Information Science and Computing, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Design, bringing the university's total number of faculties to ten. Alongside these, UM established the Institute of Smart City Technologies and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Brain Sciences. To accommodate this growth, the university is implementing a "one university, two campuses" model. The faculties of Medicine, Engineering, Design, and Information Science and Computing are based at the Cooperation Zone campus, while the Faculty of Science remains at the main campus. UM projects that the number of students specializing in science and technology will reach 14,500.

Strategic Alignment

This reorganization follows two years of systematic research and consultation. The initiative is built to support the "Education for Macao, Talent for Macao" policy and the deeper integration of Macao and Hengqin within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. By bridging the gap between basic sciences, information intelligence, modern medicine, and creative design, the university aims to create a multidisciplinary ecosystem. Rector Song Yonghua stated that the restructuring aligns with the national strategy to build a science and technology powerhouse and meets the specific needs of Macao’s economic diversification.

Industrial Implications

This shift marks a transition for UM into a dedicated high-tech research hub. By integrating artificial intelligence and medicine with engineering, the university intends to accelerate the commercialization of technology and resolve critical industrial bottlenecks in the region. For Macao, this represents a strategic move to diversify the local economy, reducing its long-term reliance on the traditional gaming and tourism sectors by fostering a sustainable, knowledge-based industry.

Future Outlook

While the new faculties are now operational, the university continues to expand its research infrastructure. UM is progressing with the establishment of two additional research institutes focused on life sciences and clinical and translational medicine. Once completed, these additions will further increase the university's specialized research capacity as it seeks to solidify its role as a primary engine for technological growth in the Greater Bay Area.
