The Clements Center for National Security at UT Austin has launched its Defense Technology Fellows Program to connect undergraduate STEM students with the national security sector. The local ecosystem includes the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command (T2COM) and a growing number of private firms specializing in defense tech. This regional growth is mirrored in the financial sector; venture funding for Austin-area startups reached a record $7.19 billion in 2025.

One prominent example of this boom is Saronic Technologies, an Austin-based company developing autonomous naval vessels, which secured a $600 million Series C funding infusion in 2025. This influx of capital and infrastructure provides a fertile environment for students to see the immediate transition of academic research into deployable defense assets.

Aligning Technical Expertise with Strategy

The fellowship addresses a historical divide between technical disciplines and strategic policy. According to Dirk Ringgenberg, a professor of practice at the Clements Center, the center has traditionally attracted students from political science, government, and history, but has struggled to reach those in STEM fields who possess parallel but distinct interests.

As national security becomes increasingly dependent on robotics and artificial intelligence, the need for engineers who understand the policy implications of their work has become critical. By integrating these students into the national security ecosystem, the program ensures that the next generation of developers does not work in isolation from the strategic goals of the state.
