AI Trade Shifts to Infrastructure: 3 Semiconductor Equipment Stocks to Watch

As AI investment moves from pure-play chips to advanced packaging and testing, equipment providers are seeing record growth.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · September 11, 2026

The artificial intelligence investment cycle is evolving beyond the initial rush for GPUs and CPUs toward the critical infrastructure required to build them. This shift is positioning semiconductor equipment providers as the new primary beneficiaries of data center expansion.

Zacks Investment Research has identified Amkor Technology (AMKR), Ultra Clean Holdings (UCTT), and FormFactor (FORM) as 'Strong Buy' recommendations. This outlook comes as the global semiconductor manufacturing equipment market enters a period of aggressive expansion. According to forecasts from SEMI and reported by EE Times Asia, the market is expected to reach $165.9 billion in 2026—a 23.2% year-over-year increase—before climbing to a record $229.5 billion by 2028.

The Infrastructure Pivot

For the first wave of the AI trade, investors focused heavily on chip designers like NVIDIA. However, the current phase emphasizes the 'picks and shovels' of the industry: the specialized cleaning, testing, and packaging equipment necessary for leading-edge logic and data center hardware.

This transition is particularly evident in the rise of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and advanced packaging techniques such as co-packaged optics. As AI models grow in complexity, the physical assembly and verification of these chips become the primary bottlenecks. Consequently, companies that provide the tools to solve these bottlenecks are seeing direct financial gains. FormFactor (FORM), for instance, reported record DRAM revenues of $85 million in the second quarter of 2026, with HBM contributing approximately two-thirds of that total.

Strategic Alliances and Market Impact

Beyond testing, the packaging sector is forming deep ties with the industry's largest players to secure long-term growth. Amkor Technology (AMKR) has solidified its position in the ecosystem by establishing a 10-year strategic partnership with TSMC and securing a multi-year agreement with NVIDIA. These partnerships ensure that as the giants of AI scale their hardware, the infrastructure providers scale with them.

The consequence for the broader market is a diversification of risk. While the demand for the chips themselves may eventually stabilize, the overall capital expenditure for AI data centers continues to rise. This creates a durable growth path for equipment providers who can maintain the manufacturing pipeline regardless of which specific chip architecture dominates the market.

What to Watch

Investors should monitor the continued rollout of HBM3 and subsequent memory standards, as these will drive the next wave of equipment upgrades. While the growth trajectory for the manufacturing equipment market remains steep through 2028, the primary variable remains the pace of data center construction and the ability of packaging firms to meet the throughput demands of the major cloud providers. Whether these 'Strong Buy' recommendations translate into long-term gains will depend on the industry's ability to scale advanced packaging at the same rate as chip design.
