Axcelis to Invest $35 Million in South Korean Manufacturing Hub

Axcelis Technologies is expanding its global footprint with a $35 million investment in a new semiconductor equipment manufacturing facility in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. The move places critical production capacity in one of the world's most vital chip-making regions to meet rising global demand.
The new site will span approximately 200,000 square feet and is dedicated to the production of ion implantation systems. According to company plans, the facility will feature Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 cleanrooms, as well as dedicated warehousing and a training center. Axcelis has scheduled the groundbreaking ceremony for October 20, 2026, with full production expected to commence in the second half of 2028.
The Role of Ion Implantation
Headquartered in Beverly, Massachusetts, Axcelis has operated in the semiconductor equipment market for nearly five decades. The company specializes in ion implantation, a critical fabrication process used to modify the electrical properties of semiconductor materials by introducing dopants. While Axcelis already maintains a presence in South Korea, this new investment represents a significant scaling of its physical infrastructure within the country.
