Broadcom AI Surge Hits Physical Limits as Guidance Miss Spooks Investors

Broadcom reported a massive surge in quarterly revenue driven by the AI boom, yet the company's stock faced immediate pressure. The results signal a pivotal moment where the primary constraint on AI growth is shifting from chip design to physical infrastructure.
For the second quarter of calendar year 2026, Broadcom posted revenue of $29.59 billion, an 85.5% increase year-on-year. The company also beat expectations on the bottom line, reporting an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $3.32. However, the market focused on the forward-looking guidance: Broadcom projected Q3 revenue of $34.8 billion, a figure that landed approximately 1.1% below analyst estimates.
The AI Engine
Growth is being propelled by an explosion in demand for AI semiconductors. CEO Hock Tan noted that AI semiconductor revenue grew 221% year-on-year in the third quarter, reaching $16.7 billion. This growth was largely driven by custom accelerators, known as XPUs, which saw shipments grow more than 3.5x year-on-year. These custom chips now account for 73% of the company's total AI revenue.
While the volume is impressive, the shift in product mix is impacting the company's financials. CFO Amie O'Toole stated that as XPUs become a larger proportion of the revenue mix, it has an impact on the company's margins.
Infrastructure Bottlenecks
Broadcom's current struggle is not a lack of demand, but a lack of capacity. The company is hitting the physical limits of the AI build-out, specifically regarding power availability, land for data centers, and specialized component manufacturing. To combat these constraints, Broadcom has moved into the financing space.
The company launched the XPV financing platform in partnership with Apollo and Blackstone. This strategic move is designed to enable over 20GW of compute infrastructure for major AI labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic, by 2028. By helping customers secure the power and land necessary to house its hardware, Broadcom is attempting to clear the path for its own future sales.
Market Implications
This situation highlights a critical transition in the AI trade. For the past two years, the narrative focused on who could design the fastest chip. Now, the bottleneck has shifted to the supply chain and the electrical grid. The negative market reaction to a marginal guidance miss suggests that investors have priced in near-perfect execution and are highly sensitive to any signal that physical constraints might slow the deployment of AI hardware.
