CesiumAstro pivots to network operator with TXMission buy and LEO filing

Austin-based CesiumAstro is transitioning from a hardware component supplier to a full-scale satellite network operator. The company has acquired U.K.-based TXMission and filed for a massive new low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, signaling a major strategic expansion.
CesiumAstro has purchased TXMission, a startup specializing in modems and software-defined radios (SDR). The move allows the company to provide complete, end-to-end software-defined phased array systems entirely in-house. Founder and CEO Shey Sabripour stated that the acquisition enables the company to serve as a "one-stop shop" for its customers. Gianni Nannetti, CEO of TXMission, described the deal as a mutually beneficial opportunity to expand capabilities and grow the engineering team.
Strategic Infrastructure
Founded in 2017 by Sabripour, a veteran of Lockheed Martin, CesiumAstro has built its reputation as a specialist in active phased array communications for aircraft and satellites. The company is already a critical supplier for the Space Development Agency's (SDA) proliferated satellite architecture. While its primary business has been providing the high-tech hardware that allows satellites to communicate, the integration of TXMission’s SDR technology removes the need to rely on external vendors for the software and modem layers of the communication stack.
Market Implications
This vertical integration transforms CesiumAstro's market position. By controlling both the phased array hardware and the software-defined radio systems, the company can now target a broader array of sectors, including ground stations, high-altitude platforms, and drones. Furthermore, the acquisition establishes a physical and operational footprint in the U.K. and Europe, diversifying its geographic reach beyond the United States.
The Path to Synchronicity
The most ambitious signal of this shift is the company's recent filing with the FCC for a LEO constellation named "Synchronicity." The plan involves deploying 737 satellites designed to provide reconfigurable connectivity. This move indicates that CesiumAstro no longer intends to simply sell the tools used to build networks, but intends to own and operate the network itself.
Industry observers will now be watching for FCC approval of the Synchronicity filing and the timeline for the first satellite launches. While the hardware capabilities are established through the SDA partnership, the transition to a constellation operator represents a significant leap in operational complexity and capital requirement.
