CG Power Enters Semiconductor Design with $36 Million Renesas RF Acquisition
The Murugappa Group company pivots from assembly to design by acquiring Japan-based Renesas Electronics' RF components business.
CG Power and Industrial Solutions has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the Radio Frequency (RF) components business of Japan-based Renesas Electronics Corporation. The move signals a strategic pivot for the Murugappa Group company as it expands its footprint in the global semiconductor value chain.
The acquisition is valued at $36 million in cash. By absorbing the RF components unit, CG Power officially enters the semiconductor design sector, adding high-value intellectual property and design capabilities to its portfolio. This acquisition allows the company to move beyond the physical assembly of chips into the creation of the components themselves.
Expanding the Ecosystem
This acquisition follows a period of aggressive expansion into the semiconductor ecosystem via CG Power's subsidiary, CG Semi Private Limited. The company has already established a significant manufacturing presence through a ₹7,600 crore joint venture involving Renesas and Stars Microelectronics (Thailand). This partnership is focused on developing an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) infrastructure in Sanand, Gujarat.
Infrastructure development in the region is already underway. The first OSAT facility, known as G1, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in July 2026. This facility serves as the foundation for CG Power's operational capacity in India, providing the necessary hardware to support the design capabilities gained through the Renesas acquisition.
Strategic Implications
The transition from being solely a semiconductor assembler to a design player is a critical shift in CG Power's business model. By owning the design process for RF components, the company reduces its reliance on external partners for intellectual property and increases its margins by capturing more of the product lifecycle.
Furthermore, this move aligns with India's broader national objective to transform into a global semiconductor hub. By integrating design and assembly capabilities, CG Power is positioning itself as a vertically integrated player capable of supporting the growing domestic demand for advanced electronics and communication hardware.
Future Outlook
Industry observers will now watch how CG Power integrates the Japanese RF business into its existing Gujarat operations. The primary focus remains the scaling of its OSAT capabilities and the potential for new design projects to emerge from the newly acquired unit. While the G1 facility is operational, the company's ability to synchronize its new design arm with its manufacturing output will determine its long-term competitiveness in the semiconductor market.
