China's CXMT Hits 10% DRAM Market Share, Breaking Decades-Long Oligopoly

The rapid ascent of ChangXin Memory Technologies has pushed the combined dominance of the industry's top three suppliers below 90% for the first time in ten years.

Chinese chipmaker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) has captured 10% of the global DRAM market as of the second quarter of 2026, establishing itself as the world's fourth-largest supplier. This surge marks a significant disruption to a market historically dominated by a tight trio of South Korean and U.S. firms.

The growth has been aggressive. CXMT's market share rose to 10% in Q2 2026, up from 8% in the first quarter of 2026 and just 4% a year prior. This expansion has eroded the combined market dominance of Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, which fell below 90% for the first time in a decade. Financially, the scale-up is reflected in CXMT's H1 2026 revenue, which reached 150.31 billion yuan (approximately $22.4 billion), representing a year-on-year increase of roughly 874%.

The Push for Self-Sufficiency

This ascent occurs against a backdrop of unprecedented demand for high-performance memory, fueled by the proliferation of generative AI and the expansion of hyperscale data centers. For years, the DRAM sector operated as a near-total oligopoly. CXMT's rise is the result of a strategic Chinese push for semiconductor self-sufficiency, aimed at reducing dependence on foreign technology amid ongoing trade tensions and strict export controls on advanced chipmaking equipment.

Shifting Industry Dynamics

CXMT is no longer competing solely on volume but is moving into advanced nodes. The company has entered mass production of LPDDR6 memory, a next-generation standard. This technology is set to make its commercial debut in September with the launch of the Xiaomi 18 Fold smartphone. By successfully scaling LPDDR6, CXMT is demonstrating the ability to compete at the high end of the mobile memory market, challenging the technical lead long held by the "Big Three."

Future Outlook

The shift in the global memory landscape suggests a permanent alteration of the AI hardware supply chain. If CXMT continues to scale its production of advanced memory standards, it could significantly reduce global reliance on non-Chinese suppliers and introduce new pricing and availability dynamics for data center infrastructure. While the company has established a firm foothold in standard and low-power DRAM, the industry is now watching to see if it can replicate this success in other specialized high-performance memory segments to further challenge the established order.
