China's Domestic AI Chips Projected to Hit 90% Market Share by 2026

China is rapidly pivoting toward homegrown artificial intelligence hardware to insulate its tech sector from geopolitical volatility. Analysts from TrendForce project that domestic AI accelerators will capture nearly 90% of China's domestic market by 2026, representing a massive leap in adoption as the nation seeks to secure its computational future.

This transition is fueled by a combination of stringent U.S. export controls on high-end semiconductors and direct mandates from Beijing encouraging the adoption of local hardware. According to TrendForce, this policy push provides priority support to high-potential domestic players, allowing them to substantially expand their footprint in the high-end AI server market. Huawei and Cambricon are positioned as the primary beneficiaries of this shift, filling the void left by restricted American silicon.

A Dual-Track Strategy

To ensure stability and performance, China is employing a "dual-track" strategy. The first track relies on merchant GPUs—general-purpose accelerators sold by companies like Huawei and Cambricon. The second track involves the development of proprietary Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). These custom chips are being designed internally by China's largest tech giants, including Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance, and Tencent, to meet the specific architectural needs of their own massive AI models.

The Geopolitical Stakes

This shift represents a strategic decoupling of the world's second-largest economy from U.S. semiconductor dominance. By scaling domestic production and building a self-reliant hardware ecosystem, China aims to reduce the efficacy of U.S. export controls as a geopolitical tool. If successful, the move ensures that the development of Chinese AI is no longer contingent on the availability of American hardware, effectively neutralizing the impact of trade restrictions on its long-term AI ambitions.

Remaining Bottlenecks

Despite the projected market share gains, significant hurdles remain. While hardware production is scaling, China faces critical bottlenecks in software and specialized components. Specifically, replacing Nvidia's CUDA software ecosystem—the industry standard for AI development—remains a daunting task.

Additionally, the domestic production of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a critical component for high-performance AI chips, continues to be a vulnerability. If China cannot match the software efficiency and memory supply of its Western counterparts, the overall market size in terms of total units deployed could potentially shrink, even as the percentage of domestic share increases. This gap suggests that while China may achieve independence in chip design, achieving parity in performance remains a steeper climb.
