Chip Investors Ignore Fidelity Peak Warning as Leveraged ETF Flows Remain Sticky

Traders continue to hold high-risk 3x leveraged semiconductor positions despite warnings that the AI-driven boom may be nearing a cyclical top.

Retail and speculative investors are maintaining aggressive positions in semiconductor ETFs despite warnings from one of the world's largest asset managers that the sector may be nearing a cyclical peak. This disconnect between macro signals and investor behavior highlights a growing appetite for risk in the AI-driven chip trade.

Jurrien Timmer, Director of Global Macro at Fidelity, has observed that speculative flows into semiconductor ETFs have remained "sticky" even as assets under management have decreased. Timmer noted that while current earnings momentum remains strong, the semiconductor sector is "due" for a cycle peak relatively soon. This caution comes as many traders continue to pile into high-risk instruments like the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares (SOXL), which provides 3x daily long leverage to the PHLX Semiconductor Index.

The Cyclical Nature of Silicon

The semiconductor industry has historically operated on a boom-and-bust cycle. These periods are typically defined by intense capital expenditure (capex) to meet surging demand, followed by inevitable corrections as supply catches up or demand plateaus. The current surge is fueled by the rapid integration of artificial intelligence across global industries, sparking a fierce debate among analysts. Some argue that AI represents a secular shift—a permanent increase in growth—while others, including Timmer, suggest the current trajectory is a cyclical peak in the rate of change.

The Danger of Leverage

The persistence of "sticky" flows into 3x leveraged products like SOXL introduces significant systemic risk for retail traders. Unlike standard ETFs, leveraged products are subject to volatility decay and "beta slippage." This means that in a choppy or sideways market, these instruments can lose value even if the underlying PHLX Semiconductor Index remains flat over time. If a sharp cyclical correction occurs while investors are heavily positioned in these leveraged products, the resulting drawdown could be catastrophic, as losses are magnified threefold.

Watching the Peak

Market participants are now watching for signs that the AI-driven capex cycle is slowing. While earnings reports have provided a bullish backdrop, the divergence between Fidelity's macro outlook and actual fund flows suggests a market that is pricing in a "permanent" boom rather than a cyclical one. The primary question remaining is whether the fundamental earnings growth can outpace the inherent volatility of the sector, or if the "sticky" positions in leveraged ETFs will leave traders exposed to a sudden market reversal.
