UK-based fabless chipmaker EnSilica plc is establishing a new Space & Communications Semiconductor Centre of Excellence in Milan, Italy. The move marks a strategic expansion of the company's engineering capabilities within the European Union to support the growing demand for satellite and communications hardware.
As part of the launch, EnSilica plans to recruit 20 specialist modem and mmWave engineers within the first six months of operation. The Milan facility becomes the company's third site in the EU, complementing its existing design center in Budapest, Hungary, and its sales office in Munich, Germany. EnSilica specializes in the development of mixed-signal application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and application-specific standard products (ASSPs) tailored for the automotive, industrial, communications, and space sectors.
Strategic EU Alignment
This expansion is designed to align EnSilica more closely with European semiconductor initiatives and the region's burgeoning space economy. By planting a flag in Northern Italy, the company is positioning itself to leverage a mature ecosystem of communications and semiconductor expertise. According to CEO Ian Lankshear, Milan was a "natural decision" for the new center because the city sits within one of the most significant semiconductor and communications ecosystems in Europe.
