Fujifilm is investing approximately 7 billion yen (US$48.7 million) to expand semiconductor material production at its Oita site in Japan. The move aims to secure the supply chain for high-performance chips essential to the growth of AI, 5G/6G, and autonomous driving.
The investment involves the acquisition of adjacent land and the construction of a new facility dedicated to production equipment and inspection devices for post-CMP cleaners. These specialized materials are used to remove organic residues, metal fragments, and particles following the chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) process. According to company plans, the new Oita facility is scheduled to begin operations in the spring of 2026.
Strategic Diversification
This expansion is part of a broader 20 billion yen strategic investment in semiconductor materials across Fujifilm's Japanese footprint. While 7 billion yen is dedicated to Oita, the company has allocated 13 billion yen to its Shizuoka site to enhance the production of advanced photoresists. This dual-site approach reflects Fujifilm's successful pivot from its legacy photography business into a high-tech materials provider, offering a comprehensive suite of photoresists, CMP slurries, and thin-film chemicals.
