GE Appliances Partners With Texas Instruments to Reshore Chip Supply

The appliance maker will source one-third of semiconductors for its new Kentucky plant from TI to reduce reliance on overseas supply chains.

GE Appliances, a Haier company, is expanding its strategic partnership with Texas Instruments (TI) to integrate US-manufactured semiconductors into its next generation of connected appliances. The move strengthens the domestic supply chain for critical electronic components while accelerating the development of smarter home technology.

Under the expanded agreement, TI will supply approximately one-third of the semiconductors used in products manufactured at GE Appliances' new laundry plant in Louisville, Kentucky. This commitment nearly doubles GE Appliances' spending with the chipmaker. TI will provide a suite of components, including microcontrollers, analog components, and Wi-Fi connectivity solutions. Production at the Kentucky facility is expected to begin in 2027, with chips sourced from TI's US manufacturing sites in Lehi, Utah, as well as Richardson and Sherman, Texas.

The 'Zero Distance' Strategy

This partnership is a core component of GE Appliances' "Zero Distance" strategy, an initiative focused on reducing the gap between the manufacturer and the consumer by expanding a domestic network of 6,500 US-based suppliers. By shifting procurement to TI's domestic fabrication facilities, GE Appliances aims to reduce its reliance on overseas supply chains and shorten the research and development cycle for the US market.

"TI's broad portfolio of advanced embedded processing and analog technology will help our engineers design appliances that are smarter, more powerful and more efficient than ever before," said Lee Lagomarcino, Vice President of Clothes Care for GE Appliances.

Implications for the Industry

The collaboration reflects a broader industrial trend toward "reshoring" critical technology to insulate production from global supply chain volatility. By integrating advanced hardware—including GaN-based motor drive technology and edge AI capabilities—GE Appliances is positioning its future laundry line to be quieter and more energy-efficient. Specifically, TI's GaN motor drivers achieve over 99 percent efficiency, which eliminates the need for traditional heat sinks in the hardware design.

Beyond efficiency, the integration of advanced connectivity allows for smarter features such as predictive maintenance, which can alert users to hardware issues before a total failure occurs. Vinay Agarwal, Vice President and General Manager of MSP Microcontrollers at Texas Instruments, noted the company is "proud to have our U.S.-produced chips integrated into GE Appliance’s U.S.-produced appliances."

Looking Ahead

As the industry moves toward more autonomous and connected home ecosystems, the success of this partnership will depend on the timely scaling of the Louisville plant by 2027. Observers will be watching to see if this domestic-first sourcing model provides a measurable competitive advantage in lead times and product reliability compared to competitors still relying on East Asian semiconductor hubs.
