Indichem Opens Gongju Plant to Secure Semiconductor Material Supply
A joint venture between Indian and Korean firms aims to reduce reliance on China and Japan for critical photoresist raw materials.
Indichem inaugurated a new semiconductor materials production facility in Gongju, South Chungcheong Province, on August 28. The plant marks a strategic expansion of the region's chip supply chain, aiming to stabilize the flow of critical chemicals.
The facility is the result of a joint venture between India's Acutaas Chemicals, which holds a 75% stake, and Korea's J&Materials. Built on a 16,500-square-meter site, the project represents an investment of approximately 30 billion won (roughly 200 crore rupees). The plant is designed to produce monomers, cross-linkers, and photoacid generators (PAGs), which serve as essential raw materials for semiconductor photoresists. Initial mass production will focus specifically on materials required for argon fluoride (ArF) lithography.
Strategic Sourcing Model
The establishment of the Gongju plant follows a specialized business model designed to optimize cost and purity. Under this arrangement, Indichem sources and synthesizes the necessary chemicals in India before transporting them to the Korean facility. Once in Gongju, these materials are purified to the ultra-high purity levels required for semiconductor fabrication. This hybrid approach allows the company to leverage Indian chemical synthesis capabilities while maintaining the rigorous quality standards demanded by the Korean chip industry.
Reducing Foreign Dependence
This expansion is a critical step in enhancing South Korea's supply chain resilience. For years, the domestic semiconductor industry has faced significant risks due to a heavy reliance on high-purity chemicals and wafers imported from Japan and China. By localizing the purification process and diversifying the source of raw materials through the partnership with Acutaas Chemicals, Indichem aims to mitigate the impact of geopolitical tensions and trade restrictions that have previously disrupted the flow of essential materials.
