Intel Report: Corporate Robotics Ambition Outpaces Operational Readiness
While 60% of senior leaders expect to deploy robotic workforces within five years, few have the strategies or safety standards to scale them.
Corporate ambition for automation is rapidly outstripping operational reality, according to a new global research report from Intel. The study reveals a significant disconnect between the desire to deploy robotic workforces and the actual organizational preparation required to manage them at scale.
In the report, titled "The Robotics Readiness Gap," Intel found that 60% of senior leaders expect their organizations to operate robotic workforces within the next five years. However, this optimism is not matched by strategic planning; only 40% of organizations have established formal strategies for managing human-robot collaboration. The research was based on a survey of 800 senior business and IT executives and officials across the U.S., UK, Germany, Japan, China, and South Korea.
The Shift to Physical AI
This gap emerges as artificial intelligence evolves into "Physical AI," moving robotics from isolated experimental pilots to a core strategic enterprise priority. To address this transition, Intel is positioning its edge AI processors and software tools, including the Intel Robotics AI Suite and OpenVINO, to help companies move technology from the lab into real-world production environments.
Operational Bottlenecks
According to the findings, the primary obstacle to the robotics revolution is no longer the availability of the technology itself, but the internal readiness of the companies attempting to use it. A lack of standardized frameworks is a primary concern, with 68% of respondents stating that clearer global safety standards would accelerate the adoption of robotics.
Without a corresponding evolution in operational strategies and safety protocols, companies risk failing to capture the productivity gains offered by automation, even if they possess the technical means to deploy the hardware. As John Healy, Vice President and General Manager of the Industrial and Robotics Division at Intel, noted, the next phase of adoption will not be defined by whether organizations can deploy robots, but by whether they are prepared to scale them.
The Path to Production
Moving forward, the industry must focus on bridging the divide between pilot projects and large-scale production. The report suggests that the transition depends on moving beyond the "experimental" phase and establishing the formal governance and safety structures necessary for a mixed human-robot workforce. Until these operational gaps are closed, the widespread scaling of Physical AI will likely remain stalled despite high executive interest.
