Intel to keep Raptor Lake available for DDR4 users while eyeing 2026 Nova Lake launch
The chipmaker is extending support for the LGA1700 platform to capture the budget market while preparing a high-end architectural leap.
Intel is pursuing a dual-track hardware strategy to protect its market share among budget builders while preparing a long-term performance play for enthusiasts. The company will continue to provide wide availability for its Raptor Lake processors to support users remaining on older memory standards, even as it develops the next generation of high-end silicon.
In a detailed interview with Tom's Hardware, Intel VP Robert Hallock confirmed that Raptor Lake CPUs—comprising the 13th and 14th Generation processors—are "not going anywhere." Intel is intentionally maintaining the availability of these chips on the LGA1700 platform to ensure a viable upgrade and build path for users who cannot justify the cost of transitioning to DDR5 memory. This move ensures that entry-level PC builders have access to competitive hardware without the requirement of purchasing expensive new motherboards and RAM.
The DDR4 Dilemma
This strategic pivot comes as Intel navigates a complex transition period following the launch of the Core Ultra 200S (Arrow Lake) series. While Arrow Lake represents the company's latest technology, it mandates a move to DDR5, creating a financial barrier for a significant portion of the consumer base. The enthusiast market currently remains split between early adopters of high-speed DDR5 and a large contingent of budget-conscious users who rely on the stability and lower cost of DDR4.
Protecting the Entry Level
By extending the lifecycle of Raptor Lake, Intel is attempting to prevent budget and entry-level builders from migrating to competitors like AMD. Hallock noted that as many PC makers shift their primary focus toward the mid-range and enthusiast segments, budget builders are often left with few viable options. Maintaining the LGA1700 ecosystem allows Intel to capture this demographic by offering a low-cost entry point into the ecosystem.
The Road to Nova Lake
While Raptor Lake secures the bottom of the market, Intel is looking toward the end of 2026 for its next major architectural leap: Nova Lake. Positioned as a future high-end architecture, Nova Lake is the company's long-term bet on regaining undisputed performance leadership in the enthusiast space. This upcoming release is expected to move beyond the incremental gains of recent refreshes to deliver a more substantial leap in computing power.
Industry observers will be watching to see if Intel introduces further hybrid motherboard options to bridge the gap between memory standards. For now, the company's priority remains a balanced portfolio that supports the legacy of DDR4 while building the foundation for the 2026 arrival of Nova Lake.
