Japan Injects ¥150 Billion into Rapidus to Accelerate 2nm AI Chip Race

The Japanese government has allocated an additional ¥150 billion (approximately $944 million) to Rapidus Corp to accelerate the development of next-generation semiconductors. This strategic investment aims to secure Japan's position in the high-end AI chip market by fast-tracking the production of 2nm process node technology.

Funding is part of a broader effort to establish Rapidus as a viable competitor to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). The company specifically targets the 2nm process node, which is essential for producing advanced AI-related semiconductors. Rapidus was established in August 2022 with the backing of eight major Japanese industrial giants: Sony, Toyota, SoftBank, NTT, NEC, MUFG Bank, Kioxia, and Denso.

The Strategy for Semiconductor Sovereignty

This investment is the centerpiece of a national strategy to regain global leadership in the semiconductor industry after decades of decline. Rather than following a traditional incremental path, Japan is attempting to skip several generations of chip technology to jump directly to the 2nm node. By doing so, the government hopes to leverage Japan's existing global strengths in semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment to create a specialized hub for AI chips. This approach is intended to reduce the nation's heavy reliance on foreign foundries, specifically TSMC and Samsung, for critical computing hardware.

Why the 2nm Node Matters

The race for 2nm chips is a critical geopolitical and economic battle because this specific node enables the extreme power efficiency and processing speed required for next-generation AI models. For Japan, the success of Rapidus represents more than just industrial growth; it is about securing a strategic sovereign capability. By establishing domestic production of the world's most advanced chips, Japan can mitigate the significant geopolitical risks associated with the current concentration of high-end chip production in Taiwan.

While the funding provides a necessary capital boost, the project remains a high-stakes gamble.
