Microsoft has integrated an invisible watermarking system into its Paint and Photos applications to identify content generated by artificial intelligence. The move aims to establish a digital trail for AI-created imagery, though recent findings suggest the system can be decoded by outside parties.

According to reports from Tom's Hardware, the software automatically embeds these markers into images created via Microsoft's AI tools. A researcher, Xusheng Li, successfully reverse-engineered the embedding process, discovering that the system inserts a server-issued Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) directly into the image pixels. This GUID serves as a unique fingerprint, allowing the company to track the provenance of the content and verify its AI origins.
