Microsoft to Retire Azure SQL Data Sync by September 2027

The bidirectional synchronization tool is no longer accepting new users as Microsoft pushes customers toward specialized migration paths.

Microsoft has entered the final phase of retiring Azure SQL Data Sync, a service designed for bidirectional data synchronization between on-premises and cloud databases. The service will officially shut down on September 30, 2027.

According to Microsoft Learn, the tool allows for bidirectional synchronization across multiple databases, spanning both on-premises environments and the cloud. While existing customers can continue to utilize the service until the 2027 deadline, Microsoft has already stopped accepting new users for the tool, effectively capping its growth as it moves toward full decommissioning.

The role of SQL Data Sync

Azure SQL Data Sync was primarily deployed across three core architectural scenarios. It served as a bridge for hybrid data synchronization between local SQL Servers and Azure SQL, supported distributed applications used for reporting, and enabled globally distributed applications operating across different geographic regions. For many organizations, the service provided a streamlined method to maintain data consistency across disparate environments without the need to build and maintain complex custom ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines.

Implications for database architecture

The retirement of the service forces users to migrate to more specialized alternatives, as there is no single, drop-in replacement for the tool's broad functionality. Because the service handled multiple distinct use cases—hybrid sync, reporting, and geo-distribution—customers must now evaluate their specific requirements and potentially assemble a suite of different tools to replicate the original workflow.

Depending on the specific business need, users may be required to combine several different Azure services. For example, replicating the functionality of SQL Data Sync might now involve a combination of Azure Data Factory for orchestration, Azure Functions for custom logic, or Always On availability groups for high availability and disaster recovery. This shift moves the burden of integration from a single managed service to a more modular, but complex, architectural approach.

What remains

Existing users have until late 2027 to complete their migrations. The primary challenge for these organizations will be the transition period, as they move from a unified synchronization tool to a fragmented set of alternatives. Technical teams will need to audit their current synchronization dependencies to determine which combination of Azure tools best fits their specific hybrid or distributed data needs before the shutdown date.
