The semiconductor industry in the Netherlands has seen its turnover double since 2019, cementing the nation's role as a critical pillar of the global electronics supply chain. This surge reflects a period of unprecedented expansion in both revenue and human capital within the sector.

According to data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), industry turnover grew from €21 billion in 2019 to approximately €46 billion. This financial growth has been mirrored by a significant increase in the labor market; employment in the semiconductor sector nearly doubled during the same window, rising from 23,000 to more than 43,000 workers.

The Lithography Engine

This expansion is driven largely by the Netherlands' dominance in specialized semiconductor equipment. The country serves as the primary global hub for lithography, most notably through ASML, which produces the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines essential for manufacturing the world's most advanced microchips.

The timing of this growth coincides with a global shift toward high-performance computing. The explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) hardware requirements has created a sustained demand for the precision machinery and specialized components that the Dutch ecosystem provides, transforming a niche technical advantage into a massive economic driver.
