NVIDIA Debuts DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering
The new AI-driven rendering technology aims for photorealism but remains limited to RTX 50-series hardware for now.
NVIDIA has officially launched DLSS 5, introducing a "3D-Guided Neural Rendering" system that debuts exclusively in NBA 2K27. The technology marks a significant shift in how AI handles game visuals, moving beyond simple upscaling toward active scene synthesis.
In NBA 2K27, DLSS 5 utilizes scanned 3D models as base geometry, allowing the AI to infer lighting and shadows rather than relying on a global filter. This approach is designed to achieve Hollywood-grade photorealism by combining training data with engine-specific data. Currently, the feature is available for all GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs and via GeForce NOW. While the launch is restricted to the latest hardware, NVIDIA Head of PR Ben Berraondo stated that the company plans to expand official support to the GeForce RTX 40-series once performance on the 50-series is more fully tuned.
The Shift to Neural Rendering
This launch follows the initial reveal of DLSS 5 at GTC 2026, where NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang described the technology as the "GPT moment for graphics" and the company's most significant breakthrough since the 2018 debut of real-time ray tracing. Unlike previous iterations of DLSS that focused on frame interpolation and resolution scaling, DLSS 5 represents a transition toward neural rendering. In this model, AI actively infers scene elements like materials and lighting to create a more cohesive visual output.
However, the technology has faced scrutiny from critics who argue that such heavy reliance on AI allows developers to mask poor optimization by "hallucinating" pixels and frames. This tension was highlighted by performance data from Tom's Hardware, which noted that an RTX 5090 running at 4K (370 FPS) relies on 6x Multi Frame Generation (MFG). This implies the actual game engine is running at approximately 61 FPS, representing a four-fold performance drop compared to native rendering.
Industry Implications
The move toward AI-driven visual synthesis could fundamentally alter game development pipelines. By shifting the burden from traditional rasterization and ray-tracing to neural inference, developers may be able to achieve higher visual fidelity with less manual lighting work. Yet, this shift raises critical questions regarding visual authenticity and the performance overhead required to maintain stable frame rates without excessive frame generation.

Industry observers are now looking toward the promised rollout for RTX 40-series users. The decision to expand support may have been influenced by the modding community, as enthusiasts had already successfully ported the technology to RTX 20, 30, and 40-series cards prior to the official release. Whether DLSS 5 becomes the new standard for photorealism or remains a divisive tool for performance inflation will depend on how NVIDIA tunes the technology for older hardware.
