Power Semi Stocks Surge as Nvidia Vera Rubin Platform Signals Shift to 800V Architecture

Shares of leading power semiconductor companies surged Monday as signals emerged that Nvidia’s upcoming Vera Rubin platform will accelerate the adoption of 800VDC power architectures in AI data centers. The shift is expected to drive significant demand for Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices, which provide the efficiency and heat management necessary for next-generation AI compute.
Market reaction was immediate. Wolfspeed (WOLF) rose 5.74% to $33.61, STMicroelectronics (STM) climbed 4.17% to $56.56, and ON Semiconductor (ON) increased 2.96% to $85.11. The rally is tied to the technical requirements of the Vera Rubin platform, which incorporates 800VDC power architecture to support AI-scale deployments. This transition is essential as AI racks move toward power requirements of 200kW and beyond.
The Pivot to Wide Bandgap Materials
The semiconductor industry is undergoing a strategic pivot toward Wide Bandgap (WBG) materials, specifically Silicon Carbide. Unlike traditional silicon, SiC handles higher voltages and temperatures with lower energy loss, making it ideal for the massive power densities required by modern AI workloads. While SiC technology has historically been the cornerstone of the electric vehicle (EV) market, the requirements of AI infrastructure are creating a new, high-growth industrial demand stream.
Diversification Beyond Automotive
This shift represents a critical diversification for power semiconductor firms. For years, the growth narrative for SiC was almost exclusively tied to the automotive sector. However, as the EV market has experienced a relative slowdown, the emergence of "AI power" provides a fresh catalyst for growth. By moving the value proposition of SiC from automotive efficiency to the core infrastructure of AI data centers, these firms are reducing their reliance on a single industry vertical.
Infrastructure Implementation
The transition to higher voltage is already moving into the production phase. LiteOn Technology has announced plans to begin trial production of 800V HVDC solutions in August specifically for AI data centers. This initiative is being carried out in partnership with Wolfspeed, signaling that the hardware ecosystem is actively aligning with the power requirements of Nvidia's roadmap.
Investors and industry analysts are now watching for further confirmation of deployment timelines for the Vera Rubin platform. While the stock rally reflects optimism, the long-term impact will depend on how quickly data center operators can overhaul existing power infrastructure to support the 800VDC standard.
