Proxmox VE 9.2 Adds Official Arm64 Support for AI Datacenters
The open-source virtualization platform expands beyond x86-64 to support high-density Nvidia hardware.
Proxmox Server Solutions has officially broken its long-standing reliance on the x86-64 architecture with the release of Proxmox VE 9.2. Launched on August 5, 2026, the update introduces native support for Arm64, marking a strategic pivot toward the energy-efficient hardware powering modern AI infrastructure.
Developed in collaboration with Nvidia and Supermicro, the Arm64 port is specifically engineered for high-density AI datacenters. Official support is currently restricted to the NVIDIA Grace Hopper and NVIDIA Vera platforms. To qualify for official support, hardware must utilize UEFI booting and ACPI platform descriptions; consequently, consumer-grade devices such as the Raspberry Pi are excluded from the official support scope. The new build is constructed on Debian 13.5 Trixie and utilizes Linux kernel 7.0.
The Shift to Arm
For years, Proxmox has served as a primary open-source alternative to VMware, operating almost exclusively on x86-64 systems. However, the industry is currently undergoing a massive transition toward Arm-based processors due to their superior power-to-performance ratios. This is particularly evident in AI training and inference workloads, where the high core counts and efficiency of chips like Nvidia's Grace provide a critical advantage over traditional x86 architectures.
Industry Implications
By porting the environment to Arm, Proxmox removes a significant technical barrier for enterprises deploying AI-centric hardware. The partnership with Nvidia and Supermicro indicates a clear intent to capture the emerging AI datacenter market by providing a scalable, open-source virtualization layer for GPU-accelerated servers. According to Proxmox CTO Thomas Lamprecht, the release achieves "full functional parity" with the x86-64 version, ensuring that core features such as KVM, LXC, ZFS, and Ceph remain available to Arm users.
Technical Constraints and Outlook
While the feature set is consistent across architectures, there are strict operational limits regarding cluster management. Live migration is only supported between nodes of the same architecture—meaning Arm64 nodes can migrate to other Arm64 nodes, and x86-64 nodes to x86-64—but cross-architecture migration is not possible. As the ecosystem matures, the industry will be watching to see if Proxmox expands its official support to a wider array of Arm vendors beyond the current Nvidia-centric focus.
