Samsung Electronics has hired two high-profile AI and data specialists to integrate artificial intelligence across its semiconductor operations. The move is designed to optimize the entire chip value chain, spanning from initial design and process development to final manufacturing.

To lead this transformation, Samsung has appointed Han Bo-hyung as a fellow to head AI models for semiconductor R&D. Han, a former professor at Seoul National University, is an expert in deep learning and vision AI. Joining him is Hahn Tai-rin, who has been hired as a vice president to oversee the creation of "AI-ready data." Hahn brings extensive industry experience as a former senior data engineering manager at Meta and a senior developer at Persona.

The Shift to Agentic AI

This recruitment drive follows a strategic pivot toward "agentic AI," a concept Samsung's Device Solutions division introduced at Nvidia's GTC 2026 conference in March. Rather than treating AI as a standalone tool, the company is moving toward a cohesive, AI-driven workflow that connects disparate stages of chip production.

Currently, Samsung is deploying vision AI for wafer image analysis and defect detection. The company is also utilizing digital twins and autonomous AI to drive process optimization, aiming to shorten development cycles and increase overall productivity in an increasingly volatile market.

Industry Implications

Integrating AI into the physical manufacturing and design of chips represents a fundamental shift in semiconductor production. While much of the industry focuses on designing chips for AI, Samsung is focusing on using AI to build those chips more efficiently.

By automating complex engineering tasks and refining the data structures required for AI training, Samsung aims to significantly reduce time-to-market for next-generation semiconductors. In a sector where a slight increase in manufacturing defects can lead to massive financial losses, the use of autonomous AI for optimization is critical for maintaining a competitive edge against rivals such as TSMC.
