Samsung Partners With Mistral AI to Automate Semiconductor Manufacturing

Samsung Electronics has entered into a strategic partnership with French AI startup Mistral AI to integrate advanced artificial intelligence into its semiconductor engineering and manufacturing processes. The collaboration aims to transition the company toward an "intelligence-driven infrastructure" to manage the increasing complexity of modern chip fabrication.

Formalized during a state summit between South Korea and France in Paris, the agreement centers on the deployment of on-premises AI solutions. Samsung will integrate Mistral's services, including the Mistral Large model, across its semiconductor operations to create customized models tailored to its specific industrial needs. The primary technical focus is the use of AI for equipment optimization and defect detection, which Samsung intends to use to improve manufacturing precision and stabilize yields for both memory and logic chips.

The Shift to Intelligence-Driven Infrastructure

As global demand for AI chips surges, the process of designing and fabricating silicon has become exponentially more complex. Samsung is moving beyond treating AI simply as a product to be sold, instead utilizing it as a core tool to optimize the fabrication (fab) process itself. Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung's Device Solutions Division, noted that the complexities of AI chip design and manufacturing require continuous innovation in semiconductor technologies.

Securing the Supply Chain

This partnership represents a deep vertical integration of AI into the hardware supply chain. By utilizing on-premises large language models (LLMs), Samsung can process highly sensitive proprietary manufacturing data without exposing it to public cloud environments. This security layer is critical for maintaining competitive advantages in chip architecture while potentially accelerating development cycles for next-generation hardware.

Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, stated that AI is reshaping the construction of complex technologies, spanning from silicon to software. This synergy allows Mistral to apply its models to one of the most demanding industrial environments in the world, while Samsung gains a specialized toolset to maintain its leadership in the AI chip market.

Strategic Investment and Valuation

Beyond the technical integration, Samsung has solidified its relationship with the startup by leading Mistral AI's Series D funding round. This investment secured a strategic equity stake for the electronics giant. The funding round raised €3 billion (approximately $3.5 billion), valuing the French AI firm at over €21 billion.

Industry observers will now watch how quickly these on-premises models can be scaled across Samsung's global fabs and whether the resulting yield improvements provide a measurable edge over competitors in the race for high-performance AI memory and logic chips.
