Scottish semiconductor startup HexSeed Technology has secured more than £600,000 in early-stage funding to advance its specialized chip cooling technology. The investment aims to solve critical overheating issues currently facing AI data center infrastructure.

The funding round was led by Carbon13, with additional participation from Vento Ventures and the Net Zero Technology Centre. HexSeed is developing a diamond-coating process for gallium nitride (GaN) power devices. By applying this coating, the company intends to prevent the overheating that frequently plagues high-performance chips used in AI workloads, thereby improving stability and performance.

The Semiconductor Landscape

This development comes as Scotland continues to expand its ecosystem for semiconductor research and development. The region has become a hub for university spin-outs and government-backed initiatives designed to strengthen the United Kingdom's sovereign capabilities in chip design and manufacturing. As the global demand for AI processing power surges, the focus has shifted toward materials science to overcome the physical limits of traditional silicon.

Why Thermal Management Matters

Thermal throttling is one of the primary bottlenecks in the scaling of AI data centers. When chips overheat, they must reduce their clock speeds to prevent permanent damage, which leads to significant efficiency losses. Small-scale funding rounds for specialized materials, such as HexSeed's diamond-coating approach, indicate early-stage industry validation of new processes that can improve chip efficiency and manufacturing yields.
