Silicon Labs Opens Austin Innovation Center With $23 Million Texas Grant

Silicon Labs has opened the Austin Innovation Center, a new research and development laboratory located at its headquarters in Austin, Texas. The facility is designed to accelerate the design, testing, and validation of next-generation wireless semiconductor technologies for the Internet of Things (IoT).

The project was made possible by a $23 million grant from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund, which was established through the Texas CHIPS Act. This funding allows Silicon Labs to upgrade its equipment to support more advanced wafer process technology nodes. The center will specifically support the development of the Series 3 platform, with a technical focus on enhancing security, artificial intelligence, and wireless connectivity for applications spanning smart homes, healthcare, smart cities, and industrial systems.

Strengthening Domestic R&D

This expansion comes as the United States seeks to reduce barriers to innovation and counter global competition in the semiconductor industry. The Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund was created specifically to support domestic R&D investments, ensuring that critical chip design and manufacturing capabilities remain within the U.S. Silicon Labs, which operates in more than 16 countries, is leveraging this state support to maintain its position as a global leader in wireless IoT connectivity.

Industry Implications

By upgrading to more advanced wafer process nodes, Silicon Labs can reduce the time required to bring next-generation IoT chips to market. This capability is critical for the development of more energy-efficient and secure wireless technologies, which are essential for the scaling of industrial IoT and smart infrastructure.
