Sony and TSMC to Invest ¥1 Trillion in Kumamoto Image Sensor Plant

Sony Group Corp. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) are establishing a joint venture to build an advanced image sensor factory in Kumamoto, Japan. The partnership aims to secure the production of next-generation sensors, marking a significant expansion of semiconductor manufacturing within the region.

The companies are in talks to invest approximately ¥1 trillion, which reports from Bloomberg and Nikkei Asia value at roughly $6.3 billion to $6.4 billion. According to the project brief, a basic agreement for this cooperation was reached in May 2026. The facility will be dedicated to the development and production of cutting-edge image sensors, with the companies targeting the start of production for 2029.
